Based on the physicochemical properties of various reactions in organic synthesis, we have studied the effects of solvents, temperature, molar ratio of reactants and catalyst on the rate of toluene synthesis. To obtain reproducible results, the reaction was carried out in a continuous flow apparatus in a non-solvent system with 1 mol each of benzyl alcohol and cyclohexanone. Although the reaction proceeds only at a low rate under the conventional conditions of batch synthesis, in the flow reactor the reaction proceeds at a high rate of 0.35 g/h with the molar ratio of reactants and solvent at 1:1 and with a catalyst level of 0.08 mol%. A slight excess of the solvent is necessary, and the reaction is maximally enhanced by a temperature increase from 25 degrees to 60 degrees C. Toluene is produced in a continuous flow reaction at high rates, and we can control the rate of reaction in the flow reactor. The flow reactor provides a useful experimental system for the study of non-linear and non-equilibrium reactions.Q:
